FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LATE BRUCE STRADER. HAVING SOLD BRUCE'S FIREARMS COLLECTION IN JUNE OF 2013, THESE MEDALS WERE PART OF A COLLECTION THAT STARTED IN 1993 BY G. BRUCE STRADER
CANADIAN RECIPIENTS OF THE MILITARY GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL.
A GENERAL ORDER ISSUED AT THE HORSE GUARDS ON 1 JUNE 1847 ANNOUNCED THAT HER MAJESTY HAS BEEN GRACIOUSLY PLEASED TO COMMAND THAT A MEDAL SHOULD BE STRUCK TO RECORD THE SERVICES OF HER FLEETS AND ARMIES DURING THE WARS COMMENCING IN THE 1793, AND ENDING IN 1814, AND THAT ONE SHOULD BE CONFERRED UPON EVERY OFFICER, NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICER AND SOLDIER OF THE ARMY WHO WAS PRESENT IN ANY BATTLE OR SIEGE, TO COMMEMORATE WHICH MEDALS HAD BEEN STRUCK BY COMMAND OF HER MAJESTY’S ROYAL PREDECESSORS, AND HAD BEEN DISTRIBUTED TO THE GENERAL, OR SUPERIOR, OFFICERS OF THE SEVERAL ARMIES AND CORPS OF TROOPS ENGAGED.
THE ENGAGEMENTS FOR WHICH THE SUPERIOR OFFICERS MEDALS HAD BEEN AWARDED INCLUDED FORT DETROIT (16 AUGUST 1812), CHATEAUGUARY (26 OCTORBER 1813) AND CHRYSTLER’S FARM (11 NOVEMBER 1813). SEVERAL HAD BEEN AWARDED TO CANADIAN OFFICERS FOR SERVICE DURING THESE THREE ACTIONS.
ON 2 AUGUST 1847, EARL GREY, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR AND THE COLONIES, IN FORMED LORD ELGIN, THE GOVENOR OF THE PROVINCE OF CANADA, THAT IT IS HER MAJESTY’S INTENTION THAT SUCH A MEDAL SHOULD BE CONFERRED UPON THE LOYAL CANADIAN MILITIA AND UPON THE INDIAN WARRIORS WHO CO-OPERTATED WITH THE BRITISH TROOPS AT DETROIT, CHATEAUGUAY AND CHRYSTLER’S FARM. HE INSTRUCTED ELGIN TO APPOINT A BOARD OF CANADAIN OFFICERS “TO RECEIVE, INVESTIGATE AND REPORT UPON THE CLAIMS OF ALL SURVIVING OFFICERS, NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS, AND SOLDIERS OF THE CANADIAN MILITIA AND INDIAN WARRIORS”. ELGIN WROTE GREY ON 19 JUNE 1848, REQUESTING THAT THE LIST OF ACTIONS BE ENLARGED TO INCLUDE QUEENSTON HEIGHTS, LUNDY’S LANE, OGDENSBURG, LCOLLE AND PLATTSBURG “BECAUSE, FROM THE LOCAL CHARACTER OF THE FORCE, A VERY CONSIDERABLE AND DESERVICNG PORTION OF IT WAS UNABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY OF THE ACTIONS WHICH IT (THE LIST) NOW COMPRISES”.
MEDALS AWARDED TO CANADIAN INDIANS FOR SERVICE IN WAR OF 1812 HAVE, FOR YEARS, BEEN OF GREAT INTEREST TO MEDAL COLLECTORS. THE NUMBER OF SUCH MEDALS AWARDED REMAINED A MYSTERY UNTIL A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN THE OFFICIAL LIST OF RECIPIENTS WAS ACCIDENTALLY UNCOVERED IN THE DORMANT RECORDS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF INDIAN AFFAIRS, NOW IN THE CUSTODY OF THE PUBLIC ARCHIVES OF CANADA. MR. DAVID SPINK EXPRESSED AN INTEREST IN PUBLISHING THE LIST AND, FROM THIS, GREW THE IDEA OF PUBLISHING THE NAMES OF ALL CANADIAN RECIPIENTS OF THE MILITARY GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL, THE EGYPTIAN MEDAL 1882-1889 AND THE NORTH WEST CANADA MEDAL 1885. THE NAMES OF RECIPIENTS OF THE CANADA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL HAVE NOT BEEN INCLUDED IN THIS BOOKLET BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALREADY BEEN PUBLISHED.

CANADA BIDDERS: All Firearms and Ammunition sales will require a valid P.A.L. to purchase. Firearm registration applies to all restricted and prohibited firearms purchased for Canadians except firearms classified as antique and non-restricted. All restricted and prohibited firearms will have their transfer started on sale day.
U.S. and INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS: Have sole responsibility for their purchases. You and or your FFL may be required to file paperwork with the ATF in order to be able to import an item. Please check with your FFL and/or ATF regarding import of specific items.
Please note that we do not ship AMMUNITION, or any class, style, type of firearm to US or international buyers (if it looks like a firearm, we can't send it). **NEW** All US and International bidders will be required to use an exporter to ship ANY firearm to them. We are no longer able to send any firearm directly to you.
Storage fees of $5.00 per item per month will be charged on all items that we have not received paperwork for within 120 days of the sale. If you are unable to complete the required paperwork within 1 year your lots will be sold at the next auction. You will be charged a commission on the resale.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEES: As we are selling Firearms and Ammunition it is imperative that bidders/customers provide us their correct information. We require your full correct name as on your PAL, License #, Date of Birth, Mailing address that is associated with your PAL. Customers who fail to do so, or who need the paperwork restarted due to an error on their part will be charged an administrative fee of $25.00 per lot. A competent Gunsmith should be consulted before attempting to use or fire any Firearm or Ammunition. The Purchaser expressly acknowledges and agrees that in no event shall Switzer's Auction be liable for any damages including without limitation any compensatory, incidental or consequential damages.
